Washington Hospital Healthcare System

In June 2013, UCSF Health began a broad and collaborative relationship with Washington Hospital Healthcare System (WHHS) in Fremont. The goal was to create a comprehensive regional health care network that serves the current and future needs of the Washington community while WHHS retains its independent governance as a health care district.

The affiliation started with UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital San Francisco providing a team of highly trained neonatologists at the Washington Special Care Nursery, an intermediate intensive care unit for infants requiring more extensive medical care. UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital also provides pediatric hospitalists for round-the-clock emergency and in-patient care at WHHS.

Additionally, we collaborate to support patients at WHHS through genetic counseling, cardiothoracic surgery and a prenatal diagnostic center. Cardiothoracic surgery corrects conditions such as coronary heart disease, congenital heart defects, aneurysms, arrhythmias, valvular disease and various lung disorders.

In December 2016, our affiliation grew to include cancer care. UCSF physicians Bogdan Eftimie and David Lee became co-medical directors of the UCSF-Washington Cancer Center.

This is the first step toward a future expansion of cancer services at Washington Hospital. Ultimately, WHHS and UCSF will develop a more complete, comprehensive cancer program in southern Alameda County that will provide access to highly specialized cancer services and specialists not currently available in the community.

Together, we developed the Washington Prenatal Diagnostic Center (PDC), which opened in July 2017. The PDC provides comprehensive counseling, screening and diagnostic testing for fetal disorders. UCSF Health maternal-fetal medicine specialist Jacquelyn Chyu, M.D., is the medical director of this state-of-the-art center.
