Dr. Thomas Ports is a cardiologist who specializes in elective angioplasty, the surgical opening or repair of blood vessels. He also specializes in cardiac catheterization for acute myocardial infarction (commonly called heart attack), balloon valvuloplasty of stenotic (narrowed) valves and alcohol septal ablation in obstructive cardiomyopathy.
Since performing the first coronary angioplasty at UCSF Medical Center in 1979, Ports has accumulated vast experience in performing catheter interventions. He is frequently called upon to give second opinions in difficult cases.
Ports earned his medical degree from Ohio State University School of Medicine. He completed a residency in internal medicine at the University of Chicago and a fellowship in cardiology at UCSF.
