Nathan Teismann

MD

Emergency care physician
Chicago native and ultrasound educator

Dr. Nathan Teismann is an emergency care physician doctor who specializes in diagnosing and caring for acutely ill adults. Having particular expertise in emergency ultrasound, he directs UCSF's point-of-care ultrasound program.

Providing a human-centered approach to patient care, Teismann strives to explain information on conditions and treatments in plain language and to keep the patient's best interests at the center of the decision-making process. After an emergency room visit, he welcomes contact with patients and their family members to ensure that the patient's situation has improved, discuss any unresolved issues and confirm that appropriate follow-up has been arranged.

A Windy City native, Teismann earned his medical degree at the University of Chicago after studying botany at the University of Michigan. He completed his residency in emergency medicine and a fellowship in emergency ultrasound at Highland Hospital, part of Alameda Health System. He joined UCSF in 2009.

Teismann teaches patient care and ultrasound to UCSF medical students, residents, fellows and faculty, with a particular focus on physicians completing a residency or fellowship in emergency medicine.
