Dr. Erik Hansen is an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in surgeries of the hip and knee, including reconstruction, replacement and revision (surgery to address problems with or caused by a previous implant). He has expertise in the direct anterior approach for hip joint replacement, a minimally invasive approach that has advantages such as faster postoperative healing and enhanced joint stability.
In his research, Hansen focuses on diagnosing, treating and preventing infections around artificial joints.
Hansen earned his medical degree and completed an orthopedic surgery residency at UCSF. He served as a fellow in adult reconstructive surgery at the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.
Hansen directs a database of total joint replacements as well as a database of postsurgical joint infections for the surgery.
