Dr. Erik Hansen is an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in surgeries of the hip and knee, including reconstruction, replacement and revision (surgery to address problems with or caused by a previous implant). He has expertise in the direct anterior approach for hip joint replacement, a minimally invasive approach that has advantages such as faster postoperative healing and enhanced joint stability.

In his research, Hansen focuses on diagnosing, treating and preventing infections around artificial joints.

Hansen earned his medical degree and completed an orthopedic surgery residency at UCSF. He served as a fellow in adult reconstructive surgery at the Rothman Orthopaedic Institute at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital.

Hansen directs a database of total joint replacements as well as a database of postsurgical joint infections for the surgery.

    Dr Erik Hansen is the best! He always walks in the room with a big smile. He listens to my concerns explains his treatment plan thoroughly and asks if I have any questions. He's the best doctor anyone could ask for.

    If was a very positive experience I felt that Dr Hansen is a special and dedicated person who has found his 'calling'. The initial introduction gave me a full understanding of the challenges the arthritis has created in my hips the medical solutions or options available to me and the solution I am choosing (surgery). Communication was excellent and my initial experience with Dr Eric Hansen was very positive and comfortable. Thank you!

    I didn't think of it at the time but it would have been helpful to get suggestions for exercises or things I could do to strengthen my knee/leg before my physical therapy appt over two weeks in the future

    Dr Hansen is my Santa Clause. He is an Angel and a saint. Pursuant to my second hip he replaced for me I have experienced a pain free groin or core area ever since. This is the first time I have been completely pain free in that area for over thirty seven (37) years. I told him he saved my life. While this may be a slight exaggeration he surely did salvage what is left of my life and I am back out there baby!!!

    100% I would tell others that this was an excellent way to have your appointment especially if you live 3 hours away the dr was very calm relaxed informative and not rushing to end the visit

    At this time I am wheelchair confined. Trying to get myslef up on a procedure table and xray table were terrible. Why isn't there a hoyer lift or something similar for assistance? Having 3 to 4 people trying to pull me up was embarassing. If tables went lower I could have transferred successfully.

    I am very happy with the care I have received from Dr. Hansen. He replaced my right knee about five years ago and the experience of working with him and his team was great and the outcome was excellent.     Dr. Hansen was excellent from start to finish and clearly explained the knee replacement surgery process. He and his team met with me at the hospital before going into surgery as well as after to check on me. Dr. Hansen phoned my sister following the procedure to let her know all went well and when I would be out of recovery. It all felt personal and caring.

    My experience with UCSF is that they see many patients and it feels like an assembly line. I am a cog in the fast moving wheel. Too many people are involved in my care and it is not explained to me in advance who I will be seeing for my care. The caregivers forget that I have not had this experience before and don't know the procedures or protocols. It's very frustrating.

    EHR Notes include things MD said that I do not recall being said. Memory is fallible but I'm pretty alert. I would try to correct but doing that...might take months. ;-) Interested to read additional info there would've asked more questions had info come up in person.
