Achilles Tendonitis
Diagnosis
Doctors typically diagnose tendonitis by evaluating factors that may indicate muscles have been overused. Tendonitis often develops because you suddenly become more active without enough training or conditioning. This happens a lot in occupational and recreational settings.
In addition to evaluating factors that are likely to lead to tendonitis, your doctor may do various kinds of physical examinations. Most tendons are near the surface of the skin and can easily be touched or pressed in order to make a diagnosis.
Placing pressure directly on those tendons is likely to feel uncomfortable. Your doctor may also ask you to contract the muscle attached to the tendon, usually against resistance, to see if that's painful.
